What Is Anxiety?

Feet and fear are normal emotions. They alarm yous to danger – both physical and emotional. The trouble comes when the danger detecting systems of your brain become into overdrive and  alert you to danger when there isn't whatsoever. This can happen considering of past trauma, a phobia, or a family history of anxiety.

Whatever the cause, when feet goes into overdrive, suddenly, the novel, interesting, fun things that used to bring interest and passion to your life seem threatening.  Life is meant to be total of newness and change. When you become filled with fearfulness and effort to halt that evolution, you get stuck, stagnant, and unhappy.

It'due south x:30 and Becca still has 2 assignments left, including math, which is her worst subject. Yous attempt to help and offer some suggestions for breaking things down, taking a break, and letting get of perfection,  just this only escalates her anxiety more.

Unfortunately, you've found that the only thing you can practice sometimes is sit and rub her dorsum. It'due south belatedly. Yous both feel helpless and powerless. She's exhausted, you're exhausted. At that place has to exist another way.

Coping Skills for Feet

Equally I reflect on my piece of work with clients and my own experience of anxiety, you know what really strikes me? We all try to ignore it, run away from it, or push it down. And you know what? The more than we do that, the more power we give information technology.

The expert news is, anxiety is very treatable, and at that place are excellent resource to help. The skills accept practice, merely most people can get a handle on their feet.

Here's an important tip on managing anxiety: Wait a coping tool to help x%.

Just 10%? Yup. That'southward it. About of u.s.a. need a varied fix of tools in our "Coping Toolbox" to experience calm and in control most of the time.

Here are 10 of my favorite coping tools for anxiety:

1. Admit Your Feet, Don't Push It Away

One of the virtually powerful tools I know for dealing with anxiety is to acknowledge it. Terminate trying to run from it, pretend it isn't there, block it, or mask it.

Greet anxiety: Pretend your feet is a person, a friend of yours. You hear a knock on the door.   You lot open up information technology and invite her inside. Like you would with any guest, detect out what she needs – a beverage? A seat? Someone to listen to her? What has she come to say?

Take the time to actually listen to feet and see what she needs. She is trying to communicate to you with the tightness in your back, sweaty palms, and difficulty breathing. Endeavor to listen similar you would to a friend.

If information technology feels difficult to imagine this all in your caput, write it down like a story. Could you follow through on meeting her needs? Get yourself a drink, have a seat, or journal about what is worrying you lot. Permit feet know someone is listening.

two. Get Grounded 3,two,1:

Get into a comfortable seated position with your anxiety on the floor or lying down. Name 3 things y'all SEE, iii things you HEAR, three things you FEEL. Then name 2 you lot SEE, 2 y'all HEAR, and 2 y'all FEEL. Now repeat a round of ane of each. It gets harder to See, HEAR, and Feel new things, with each round, so exercise your all-time.  Focusing on the here and now sensations is what will help ground you and dissipate the anxiety. In that location's a great infographic of this skill hither.

You don't need to be Leonardo DaVinci to do good from doodling. Take an index card and make full it with equally many types of circles as you lot can. Plow on some relaxing music in some other language or without words to help yous get into a state of "flow" where you aren't thinking too much. 6. Telephone call a Friend

Be wise here. Don't telephone call the friend who is e'er total of "You shoulds" and communication. She'due south awesome for a lot of things, but she'due south non the person you lot call when you merely need to vent and exist heard. Call the person who will quietly listen, validate your feelings, distract y'all, or make yous laugh. Be thoughtful about what you need and how to become it. You deserve that. Yeah, you practice! Click hither for more than on how to really love yourself.
